Support, Train and Rescue Dogs
At Dogs for Defense Foundation, we stand as guardians of the working dog, dedicated to the breeds that serve on the front lines—protecting, rescuing, and assisting us in countless ways. Our mission is to support these remarkable animals, ensuring they receive the care, training, and respect they deserve.
Task at Hand & Paw
The current task at hand is training 5 dogs that were born in Afghanistan from an explosive detection dog stranded after the withdrawal, and give them purpose here in the United States.
On August 30, 2021 the US Military withdrew from Afghanistan following a twenty year war. The hasty withdraw left 13 US service members killed in action at the Abbey Gate of the Kabul Airport. During this chaotic evacuation of the country Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue, was trying to evacuate over 50 explosive detection dogs as well as other animals from her non-profit, Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR). At great risk to her own safety, Charlotte Maxwell-Jones has been able to keep KSAR operational under the current government of Afghanistan.
One of the dogs rescued by KSAR was an explosive detection dog named Sheba, a German Shepherd Dog. Sheba, while in the care of KSAR, gave birth to 5 amazing puppies. Dogs for Defense Foundation has taken in that litter of five mixed German Shepherd Dogs. Dogs for Defense is training the dogs and is currently working on finding them exceptional situations where they can thrive.

Maxton
Named in Honor of Navy Hospital Corpsman Maxton Soviak
Maxton is the resident comedian of his pack, full of courage and swagger when he's with his dog buddies but a little shy when it comes to people. This unique and charming pup has been making great strides in his training, but he still has some work to do before he’s fully confident around new faces.
Maxton’s personality is as strong as his physique—he’s a bit more muscular and stout than his siblings, with a presence that’s hard to ignore. And just to add to his uniqueness, he sports a striking white eye that makes him stand out even more.
Although Maxton might be a bit shy with people, don’t be fooled by his quiet demeanor. He has a hidden talent for howling like a coyote, though most of the time he prefers to relax outside, taking in the world around him.
