Barbara (Bruchah) Fix, is the founder and Chairman of DOGS FOR DEFENSE. "It was the traumatic death, and devastating loss of limbs, blindness and cruel injuries associated with bombings that has made this work so urgent," she asserts. She has a long history of deep involvement with key Jewish causes in three nations, the United States, Israel and her native South Africa.

One of four children born to ardent Zionists, her parents were married in May 1948, the month of the establishment of the State of Israel. They worked tirelessly for, and gave generously to Israel. Both are now buried on the hills of Jerusalem.

WIZO, UJA-Federation, Friends of the Israel National Museum of Science and Technology, CAMERA (Board member), American Congress for Truth (Board member), Chabad of Westchester, are among the organizations for which she has hosted events in her home. The intifada and the bombing of innocent civilians in Israel so impacted Barbara, that she established Dogs for Defense. As a past board member of the Westchester Jewish Conference, she co-chaired the Israel Action Committee, which underscores issues of importance and concern such as the failure of the United Nations and the bias against Israel. Barbara also serves as a host of the WVOX Radio Show, "The Rabbi and the Judge," which interviews major Jewish personalities.

Barbara has been a loyal friend to the FIDF for the past 8 years. On one mission to Israel with Brigadier General (Res.) Eliezer Hemeli, who was then the National Director of the FIDF, Hemeli made a profound impression on her son, Paul, one of Barbara's five children, who was so moved by the experience that he volunteered to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Paul told Barbara that he wanted "to protect Israel from the ongoing despicable episodes of murder by capturing the instigators of the atrocities." Paul was offered a position to serve in the Paratroopers, but opted for the Egos Sayeret of the Golani Brigade. His unit was one to benefit from the protection of the dogs. Concludes Barbara, "Working for Israel causes brings wonderful people into my life."
